The appropriating subject: Cultural appreciation, property and entitlement

What is cultural ‘appropriation’? ‘appreciation’? Whatever the complex answer to this question, appropriation commonly defined as ‘the taking of something produced by members one culture another’ (Young 2005: 136), whilst appreciation typically understood mere ‘exploration’: ‘Appreciation explores whatever there’. (Gracyk 2007: 112). These provisional definitions suggest that there an in-principle distinction between two concepts presupposes following: what appreciated already available; appropriated was, prior its being taken, not or available. Moreover, perhaps appreciation, when contrasted appropriation, unproblematic precisely due basic difference. In paper, we argue exclusive disjunction – rests on a false two. We also show normative principle extent x rather than then relevant issue wrong. Against these presuppositions, defend view built into appreciation. This does mean cannot ask questions but do preclude problematics appropriation.
